Tripoley Variations

Tripoley Variations - Rules VariantsThere are three popular variations to Tripoley. I have listed them below, with a little information about each of them. I recommend trying each of them to see which ones you like.

We use the first two rules variants in our regular Tripoley games all of the time. If you aren't familiar with the rules to the basic game, you can go over them at our Rules For Tripoley page. One other tip for your overall Tripoley play, it is always a good idea to brush up on your general poker strategy if you haven't played for a while. It will come in handy.

1. Do you remember the dead hand described in the basic rules that I said would come into play in the variations? The dealer may choose to exchange his or her hand for the dead hand after looking at his or her hand. The trade must be one complete hand for the other, in other words the two hands can't be combined, and the dealer may not look at the dead hand before deciding to trade and may not trade it back. If the dealer decides to keep his or her hand, the other players may bid for the right to exchange their hand for the dead hand. The player to the left of the dealer opens the bidding and it continues to the left until one player wins the bid. That player pays the dealer the amount of the winning bid and exchanges their hand for the dead hand. Their hand is now the dead hand and the game starts.

2. Instead of collecting the chips for each "money card" before playing the poker round, each player collects the chips as they play the cards in the Rummy round. If a player doesn't get the opportunity to play a card, they don't collect the chips. This is a great variation and adds more strategy to the game. If you only decide to add one variation, I recommend this one.

3. The players may bid for the right to name the "money card" suit each round instead of always using Hearts. The dealer makes the first bid or passes the option to the first player to his or her left. The winning bidder names the suit and places the winning bid into the Kitty section. All other rules remain the same except the money cards are now the designated suit for the rest of the round.
